Transforming Vintage Camping Benches: From Yellow Latex Paint Nightmare to Nautical Delight

When the owner from Pearls and Plaid reached out and asked me to transform three vintage camping benches from eyesores covered in thick, terrible yellow latex paint to stunning fixtures with a charming nautical aesthetic - I honestly thought, "I don't think this is actually going to happen." But... this restoration project involved stripping the paint, applying a white wash to tone down the remaining yellow, and using a faux wood grain technique.

Step 1: Strip the Paint!

- The first order of business was to remove the unsightly yellow latex paint. I used a highly effective stripper QCS, made by Stripwell. Following the manufacturer's instructions, I generously applied the stripper to the benches and allowed it to work its magic. With a scraper, I scraped off the softened paint, then applied more QCS, scraped again, and finally sanded - revealing the natural wood underneath.

*This look forever and ever and ever.*

Step 2: Toning Down with a White Wash

- Once the paint was removed, there was still a subtle yellow residue remaining on the wood. I applied a white wash to the wood. This process involved diluting white paint with water to create a semi-transparent glaze. Using a brush, I applied the white wash evenly over the benches, allowing the wood grain to show through while toning down the yellow.

- I used Creamy Linen from Farmhouse Paints (and use FurnitureHunter10 for a discount!)

Step 3: Faux Wood Grain Technique for a Nautical Look

- To infuse the benches with a charming nautical aesthetic, I used a faux wood grain technique. I used the Lilly Moon Gel Stains in Wagon Wheel, Natural Cork, and Old Fashioned.

- Start by misting the piece with water, then applying the three colors in alternating patterns. I use a large sponge to get the colors to come together, then a small brush to highlight the wood grain. By carefully blending and feathering the brushstrokes, I was able to highlight the uniquenss of the wood.

Step 4: Showcasing at Pearls & Plaid

- Now that the vintage camping benches had been transformed into beautiful nautical fixtures, they found their new home at a local boutique. The benches, with their unique and eye-catching design, perfectly complemented the boutique's coastal-themed interior.
